Summary:
The music collection of Pater Barnabas Weiss, OFMCap (1815–1899), superior of the Capuchin monastery at St. Joseph's in Prague's New Town, organizer of the monastery's concert life, but also an amateur cellist and member of prominent Prague music societies, was purchased in 1923 for the newly established Music Department of the then Public and University Library by its founder Ladislav Vycpálek. The manuscripts and prints contained therein represent B. Weiss's musical taste and interests and at the same time document the musical activities at St. Joseph's Church. The selection of church compositions testifies to Weiss's broad outlook – many works were a revelation for the cultural life of the time (e.g., the performance of cantatas Stabat Mater by E. d'Astorga, A. Steffani, and G. B. Pergolesi in the 1860s). Weiss was also a skilled and respected chamber musician – he performed music among friends and selected music experts (this music-loving society also met in the monastery refectory). His collection includes a number of printed foreign editions dedicated to his instrument – the cello. B. Weiss showed a sincere interest in the work of W. A. Mozart, especially his operas (the collection contains printed short scores of entire works and excerpts), but also his chamber and symphonic music. The collection includes two of Mozart's Masonic cantatas, Die Maurerfreude (KV 471) and Das Lob der Freundschaft (KV 623). An important group is the song repertoire (L. van Beethoven, F. Schubert, F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, and Robert and Clara Schumann). Both the manuscript and printed music from Weiss's collection often feature typical period bindings with handwritten labels or printed spines bearing Weiss's name, and are also marked with an oval stamp reading "Kapuziner-Kloster St. Josef PRAG-NEUSTADT." The manuscript part of the collection has been digitized in Manuscriptorium.
