Summary:
The Strachota family music collection documents the musical activities of four generations of cantors and regenschori in Panenský Týnec and Vrbno nad Lesy between 1775 and 1850. It contains more than 500 pieces of music, mostly church music, but also chamber and symphonic music by almost two hundred composers. The collection was systematically built up over many decades, with most of the copies made by the Strachotas themselves. The founder of the collection and the author of the earliest copies was Martin Josef Joachim Strachota (1720–1800), the first member of a teaching family to be born in Panenské Týnec. His son Josef Cyril Strachota (1746–1809) took care of his music, and significantly expanded the collection, including his own compositions (he composed mainly masses and small church compositions, which are preserved here in autographs). During his life, the older part of the collection (from the last quarter of the 18th century) was systematically sorted by genre and signed. The reconstruction of these old shelfmark series has shown that more than a third of the music is now missing compared to the original quantity. To this older layer of music we should also count the copies of Erhard Strachota (1735–1778), cantor in Vrbno (brother of Martin Josef Joachim). The authors of the church music in this older part of the collection are mainly Czech composers of the 18th century. F. X. Brixi, V. J. Kopřiva, J. I. Linek, F. J. Öhlschlägel (by the order name J. Lohelius) or A. Šenkýř. Instrumental music (string duos, trios, quartets or concertante works) is represented by composers such as C. Ditters von Dittersdorf, A. Fils, A. Kammel, J. Haydn, J. Mysliveček, V. Pichl or J. K. Vaňhal. Josef Cyril Strachota's successor, his son Josef Crha Strachota (1785–1869), added 19th-century church repertoire (F. Bühler, A. Diabelli, J. B. Schiedermayr and K. Vogel). In a similar vein, the last cantor in Panenský Týnec, Josef Crha's son Josef Jeroným Strachota (1813–1882), continued the collection. The collection was found in the 20th century in the school in Vrbno nad Lesy by a distant descendant of Erhard Strachota, Ladislav Dvořák, who enabled its research and the first registration for the Unique Music Catalogue of the National Library of the Czech Republic as early as 1978. Later, the collection was purchased by the National Library of the Czech Republic (1983) and catalogued for the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM) at the beginning of the new millennium. In 2023, a thematic catalogue of this collection was published in the National Library's series Catalogus artis musicae in Bohemia et Moravia cultae. The collection also contains 3 letters addressed to Josef Crha Strachota. In 2024 more autographs of Josef Cyril Strachota were discovered in the collection of the Prague Conservatory Library.
